Chile–Peru
The maritime boundary between Chile and Peru was established in a judgment handed down by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on 27 January 2014. The boundary Judgment limited the scope of any notional understanding emanating from the 1954 Special Maritime Frontier Zone Agreement, which was whether or not a lateral boundary had been established following the 1952 Santiago Declaration. The Court decided that a boundary following a parallel of latitude running through Hito 1 had been agreed to but that its seaward reach at the time would have been no more than 80 nautical miles (M). From this point the boundary follows an equidistance line until it reaches the 200 M limit of Chile, and from there it follows this 200 M limit until it arrives at the intersection with Peru’s 200 M limit. The Court’s termination of the boundary at an equidistance point on the 200 M line generated from the Parties’ relevant coasts eliminated any possibility of creating a “grey area.”
