The Côte d’Ivoire–Guinea boundary was established in very general terms in 1899 under French colonial administration, but there has never been any detailed delimitation. Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea appear to have accepted the boundary as depicted on French colonial maps, but the lack of certainty over the alignment of the frontier has led to occasional cross-border incursions and local tensions. Based on French mapping, the boundary mostly follows rivers and watersheds for more than 800 km, although the direct distance between the tripoints with Liberia in the south and Mali in the north is less than 300 km in length.
