The maritime boundary between Australia and Timor-Leste was established through a bilateral agreement that was reached on 6 March 2018. The maritime boundary replaces a joint development area initially established between Australia and Indonesia before Timor-Leste gained its independence in 2002. The new maritime boundary between Australia and Timor-Leste is comprised of two lateral segments, connecting the 1971 Australia–Indonesia seabed boundary with their 1997 exclusive economic zone boundary, and a modified equidistance line delimiting the continental shelves of Australia and Timor-Leste. The two States also agreed to a special regime area for the Greater Sunrise oil and gas fields located off the coast of Timor-Leste.
