Kiribati–Marshall Islands
In 2012, the Republic of Kiribati and the Republic of the Marshall Islands agreed to establish their maritime boundary in the North Pacific Ocean. The boundary, based on the principle of equidistance, extends for 527 nautical miles and consists of 24 coordinates connected by geodesic line segments. The boundary divides the States’ continental shelves and exclusive economic zones. The islands that control the course of the line are part of Kiribati’s Gilbert Islands—Banaba, Butaritari and Makin—and the Marshall Islands’ southernmost atolls of Ebon and Nadikdik. A tripoint agreement with Nauru was signed the same day. As of 2025, the maritime boundary and the tripoint agreement with Nauru are still awaiting ratification.
