Mauritania–Senegal

Established by French authorities as the border between the colonies of Mauritania and Senegal, the 852 km boundary extends roughly east-to-west and almost entirely follows the Senegal River. There is a general lack of documentation regarding the border, and no information was located concerning demarcation efforts. Tensions stemming from territorial disputes erupted into a border war between Mauritania and Senegal during the late 1980s. The Mauritanian and Senegalese governments eventually agreed to engage in peaceful negotiations, and relations between the two countries have remained stable since the end of the conflict.
