The southern half of Malawi cuts deep into the northern half of Mozambique, creating a lengthy 1,750 km looping boundary that comprises sections following rivers, watersheds, straight lines, and even roads. There is a 224 km section following the equidistance line between the eastern and western shores of Lake Malawi/Lake Nyasa. Initially delimited in general terms in an Anglo–Portuguese treaty in 1891, the boundary was clarified and adjusted through numerous agreements up to 1963, shortly before Malawi’s independence from the United Kingdom. Demarcation work was undertaken following several of the agreements, and Malawi and Mozambique are currently in the process of reaffirming the boundary using modern surveying technology and redemarcating the line where necessary.
