Australia–New Zealand
On 25 July 2004, the governments of Australia and New Zealand signed an agreement establishing their exclusive economic zone and continental shelf boundaries in the Tasman Sea and Southern Ocean. Composed of two distinct segments, the northern boundary spans 1,453 nautical miles and delimits the overlapping maritime entitlements generated by New Zealand’s northern island and Australia’s Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands. The southern boundary extends for 770 nautical miles, delimiting the overlapping maritime entitlements generated by Australia’s Macquarie Island and the New Zealand’s Campbell and Auckland Islands. While the short sections of boundary located within 200 nautical miles of the Parties’ coasts were based on modified equidistance, the extended continental shelf portions of the boundary utilized other delimitation methodologies that were deemed to have produced a more equitable result.
